• 1882 10,000 workers participate in the first US Labor Day parade, held in New York City.

• 1901 The first US professional baseball league is established, in Chicago, IL.

Minnesota

• Wild rice became Minnesota’s state grain in 1977.

• The morel became Minnesota’s state mushroom in 1984.

Benton County

• The first Benton County board meeting was held at the residence of Jeremiah Russell.

• Benton was one of only three original Minnesota counties officially opened to settlers.
